Photo of JerryJerry Markham, born November 8, 1978, is a professional artist and plein air painter residing in British Columbia, Canada.

After attending the Alberta College of Art & Design in 1997, Jerry found their teaching leaned toward modern art and painting through emotion rather than representational art and painting what you see, which is where his interest lay. So he searched out professional artists who painted in representational form and studied closely with them for years until he formed a unique style and began painting full-time on his own.

Jerry’s interests and experiences, study of master painters, and travels have played a significant role in the subjects he chooses to paint. He paints a wide range of subject matter including landscapes, wildlife, still life, figures and anything that captures his interest. His medium of choice is oil but he also enjoys watercolors.

Plein air painting and painting from life are very important to Jerry in order to capture and represent the true essence of a subject, such as the vibrant colours, proper perspective and reflected light that don’t show through in photographs. Jerry is a firm believer that as an artist you are a perennial student, therefore he continually strives to study, learn and grow as an artist. He regularly paints outdoors and enjoys participating in painting excursions with other artists. His process includes bringing his smaller plein air studies back to the studio where he paints a larger version of the subject, or he will set up a still life or figure which he paints from life.

Jerry, whose paintings are collected worldwide, is currently a member of the Oil Painters of America, International Plein Air Painters, and Federation of Canadian Artists.

Particular awards of interest include being selected finalist in the Cover Competition for American Artist magazine in February 2006, receiving the Award of Excellence for “Back Your Beef” at the National Federation of Canadian Artists show in May 2005, and featured as one of 100 artists to author the book “How Did You Paint That? 100 Ways to Paint Landscapes” released by International Artist Magazine in 2003.
